Quetico Provincial Park Canoe Trip - Fall 1999

This was my fourth trip to Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. The park is awesome in it's natural beauty and the Canadian government has managed it well. There is only a limited number of people allowed in the park at any time and there are no motors, glass bottles, or cans allowed in the park. This, along with the fact that there are no man made structures such as roads, buildings, or electrical towers, makes it a most unique area. The park which stretches almost 1,800 square miles in western Ontario along the Minnesota-Canada border is, from my perspective, the finest canoeing and wilderness area in North America.

Even an expert with maps and a compass, can get lost in this park the first few times he ventures into a new area. It is inevitable. Looking at a map and then gazing across a lake and trying to decide whether you are looking at an island or part of a distant shoreline is quite a challenge. That is part of the excitement of going there. If you keep your wits about you and don't get frustrated you will be able to figure it out.

The people I have gone with love to fish and this is some of the best smallmouth waters anywhere in the world. I have included a photo gallery and additional commentary, which you can view by selecting the "Photos" button below. I hope you enjoy the trip half as much as I did!
